Bali December 2-17

Our initial experience in Bali was not great.  When arriving the airport, some very official looking men had set our bags aside and were waiting for us when we arrived.  Adam and I naively thought that something might be wrong as we had brought food with us and when they said follow us we did, they then proceeded with us through customs and then proceeded to ask us for money in the end as they had helped us through.  Although their outfits seemed official they were just another part of the tourist trap.  From that point on Adam and I put our guard up, never letting anyone help us with our bags.  Our condo in Bali was three hours north of the airport.   The trip there was long and the road was very windy.  When we arrived I was very car sick and the hoards of night bugs around our apartment did not make our first day in Bali very enjoyable but we soon grew to love it.

Although in Bali we were in a remote area we spent most of our days swimming in our pool and snorkeling on the great reef in front of our condo.   Two days we rented a scooter and drove around the island.  The first day we drove to the les market and hiked to the Les Waterfall, which is the 2nd highest waterfall in Bali, in the afternoon we drove an hour up the coast to the Tulamben and snorkel over an old US Navy shipwreck.

A couple of days later hired a taxi and say the Tirta Ganga and Taman Ujung, which are two water palaces build by the king years ago.  We also went and say how they make sea salt, which was very interesting.

Our second scooter day we travel North west to the Art Zoo, which is this artists studio where he displays all his works of Bali inspired art.  From the pictures you can see it is a very unique place.  We spent the rest of the day just exploring.  We thoroughly enjoyed cruising around on the scooter.

Our last adventure was on the way back to the airport and our last day in Bali we went to the Mother Temple (the first three pics below) which is their largest temple and the Tanalot (last pic) which is a temple that was build out in the water on a rock.  In both these places were once again a target of tourist trap attempts, such as they would try to sell us temple guides telling us we were not allowed in with out on, even though our trusty lonely plant guide said it was perfectly fine.  We learned a  lot since our first day to not listen to the locals in the tourist areas as they are usually trying to sell you something you don’t want or need.  Our last day in Bali we spend in Kuta beach in the south which is the known surf beach, however Adam didn’t get to go out that day because the surf wasn’t very good.

My favorite time in Bali was they days we went to the Wifi café, which was a little stall on the street that they sold Wifi in.  We paid about 20 cents for unlimited usage and although it was slow it was our only option.  The owner was very helpful and told us a lot about Bali, however my favorite days were when his kids were there.  His little daughter and son would play cards while we were sitting there and one day I asked to join in.  They were about 4 and 6 maybe.  Although none of us spoke the other’s language they taught me how to play.  Most the time they sat there laughing at me because I didn’t know how to play but we had a lot a fun.  After a couple of games I even won one.  Although my new friends wouldn’t let me take a full picture of them Adam secretly snapped one.
